Water Quality Service in Frederick

What is actually in the water here

Treated municipal water can still contain hardness minerals. These can build up on fixtures and inside water heaters.

Scale takes years off a water heater, crusts fixture heads, leaves film on glassware and makes detergent work harder in every load of washing. Homes on a private well have a different problem set again: acidity, iron, sediment and bacteria are all possible, and none of them are visible.

Go Deeper

Every Kind Of Water Quality

There is no such thing as a general-purpose water quality system, which is why we test before we recommend equipment rather than after. A softener does nothing about a taste complaint. A carbon filter does nothing about hardness. Reverse osmosis handles a great deal but is usually installed at one tap rather than for the whole house.

Testing tells us which problem you have, if any. We recommend treatment based on those findings.

Treatment sequence

How a water quality job actually runs

Whole-house treatment is installed where the supply enters the building, before it branches — the apex of the line — so every fixture downstream is protected rather than just the kitchen tap.

That position is also why installation quality matters more than the equipment. A system plumbed in without correct bypass, drainage or clearance is a system nobody can service later without cutting pipe.

01

We test first

We test the water at the house rather than assuming what is in it. County supply and private wells give very different results.

02

The test specifies the system

The result decides the system. If the test says you do not need one, we will tell you that instead.

03

Installed to be serviced

Installed at the apex of the line where the supply enters, with the bypass and drainage that make it serviceable later.

04

Verified after install

We test again after commissioning, so you can see the system doing what it was specified to do.

Worth Knowing

Treating Frederick County water

Water quality matters more in Frederick County than almost anywhere else we work, because so much of the county is on private wells. A well off the Frederick Valley's limestone often runs hard; others pick up iron, sediment or low-pH water that quietly eats copper pipe. None of that is visible at the tap until something fails.

That's why every recommendation here starts with a test. Treating well water without one is guessing with your plumbing — the test says what's in the water, and the equipment follows from the test, not the other way around.

Code & Permits

Treatment equipment and Frederick County rules

Most treatment installs tie into the home's main supply line, and in Frederick any permitting that plumbing work needs runs through Frederick County Permits and Inspections — or the City of Frederick inside town — rather than WSSC.

On well systems the more important paperwork is the water test itself: it is the record of what the equipment was sized to treat. We test before we recommend, and the equipment follows the test.

Permit and inspection requirements per Frederick County Permits and Inspections. Requirements change — confirm current rules before work.

What does it mean that Mallick Plumbing is a member of the Water Quality Association?

The Water Quality Association is an industry association that provides education and resources for water quality professionals. As a member, Mallick Plumbing & Heating agrees to follow its Code of Ethics, including honest recommendations and accurate descriptions of products and services. Membership is separate from individual professional certification or certification of a particular product.

If I am on municipal water, do I still need a Water Quality System?

Not every home on municipal water needs an added system. Your utility treats and monitors the public supply, but hardness, chlorine taste or other household concerns may still be worth evaluating. Start with your utility's water quality report and an in-home analysis suited to your concerns. Any recommendation should address a specific finding and include the system's maintenance needs.

How do I know if I need a water quality system?

Chalky white scale on fixture heads and shower doors, spotting on glassware out of the dishwasher, soap and shampoo that will not lather, skin that feels dry after a shower, an odd taste or smell, or a water heater that has lost capacity earlier than it should have. A test tells you which of those is hardness and which is something else.

What types of water quality systems do you offer?

Softeners, whole-house filtration, reverse osmosis and UV purification, plus the testing that decides between them. Each targets a different problem — hardness, particulate and taste, dissolved solids, and biological contamination respectively — so the specification follows the test rather than a package.

Does a water softener also filter the water?

No. A softener exchanges the minerals that cause hardness; it is not a filter and it does not remove bacteria, sediment or most taste and odour problems. Homes that want both usually run a softener and a filter in series, which is a design decision best made off the back of a test.

We are on a well — is that different?

Private well water is not treated by the county supply. Acidity can damage copper pipes, while iron, sediment and bacteria require different treatment approaches. Testing identifies what is present.

What's actually in Frederick County well water?

It varies well to well — which is exactly why we test first. Hardness is common off the valley's limestone; iron, sediment and low-pH water show up too. The test names the problem, and the equipment follows from the test.

Can you treat both well water and city water?

Yes. Municipal supply and private wells raise different problems, and the treatment is sized to what the test finds in your water either way — not to what's sitting in a warehouse.

Where does whole-house treatment equipment get installed?

At the main line, usually after the pressure tank on a well system, so every tap in the house gets treated water — not just the kitchen.
