What UV does and does not handle
UV is aimed squarely at biological contamination, which makes it a well-water technology far more often than a public-supply one. Public water is already disinfected before it reaches you; a private well is not disinfected by anyone.
It is not a filter and not a softener. UV will not touch hardness, sediment, iron or taste — and because sediment physically shields organisms from the light, a UV system usually wants a sediment filter ahead of it to work at all.

The lamp is a consumable. It does not burn out so much as fade, losing intensity over roughly a year while still appearing lit — which is the failure mode worth understanding, because a UV system that looks fine can be doing very little.

How does a UV water purifier work?
It exposes water to ultraviolet light in a sealed chamber. The light damages the DNA of bacteria, protozoa and viruses so they cannot reproduce. Nothing is added to the water and nothing is removed from it — the organisms are simply deactivated as they pass through.
Do I need UV if I am on public water?
Usually a well, or any supply not already disinfected. Public water in the county is treated before it reaches you, so UV is rarely the first recommendation there. On a private well, where nothing is treated by anyone, it is often the most important part of the system.
Does UV remove hardness, iron or sediment?
No. UV addresses biological contamination only. Hardness needs a softener, sediment and taste need filtration, dissolved solids need reverse osmosis. UV also needs clear water to work — sediment shields organisms from the light, so a filter usually goes in ahead of it.
How often does the UV lamp need replacing?
Annually. The lamp fades rather than fails, so it keeps glowing while its output drops below what actually kills anything. That is why replacement runs on a calendar rather than on symptoms — there are no symptoms until someone gets ill.
