A sewage pump is not a sump pump, and the two are confused constantly. A sump pump moves clean groundwater out of a pit to keep a basement dry. A sewage pump moves wastewater and solids from fixtures up to the sewer line.
They fail differently, they are serviced differently, and one cannot do the other's job. If your basement floods in heavy rain, you are looking for a sump pump; if a basement bathroom backs up, it is the sewage pump.

How a sewage pump call runs
The need is structural rather than optional. When a fixture sits below the level of the sewer main — a basement bathroom, a lower-level laundry, a below-grade commercial unit — gravity cannot carry the waste out, so it has to be lifted.
The pump works with a holding basin or tank that collects the waste and prevents buildup, and discharges when the level calls for it. Sizing that basin and pump to the fixtures they serve is what stops the system short-cycling itself to death.
