How a sump pump actually works
The pump sits in a pit dug at the lowest point of the property, where water gathers first. As the pit fills, a float starts the motor, and the water is lifted into a discharge pipe and carried far enough from the house that it does not simply drain back.
That last part is where installations most often go wrong. A pump that discharges too close to the foundation moves the same water in a circle, and the pump runs constantly for no result.
