The damage from acidic water shows up as plumbing failures rather than as a water complaint. Copper corrodes from the inside, which produces pinhole leaks in pipe that looks perfectly sound from the outside. Fixtures stain — the blue-green marks in a sink or tub are copper being carried out of the pipework.

How a neutralizer job runs
The system is straightforward. We test the pH of the water first, because there is no point installing a neutralizer for water that does not need one, and the test also sizes the system.
The neutralizer is then fitted in-line at the water main with a proper bypass, and loaded with food-grade calcite or magnesium oxide media. Water passing through the bed dissolves a small amount of it, which raises the pH. The media is consumed as it works, which is why it needs replacing rather than merely cleaning.

Nothing about a neutralizer is set-and-forget, and any company that implies otherwise is selling rather than advising. The media is consumed in normal use and has to be topped up, typically every six to twelve months depending on how acidic the water is and how much the household uses.
An exhausted media bed stops neutralizing the water, leaving pipework exposed to corrosion. Regular maintenance helps prevent that.

Frederick sits outside the WSSC service area, so the permit process that covers Mallick's Montgomery County work does not transfer here. In the county, plumbing permits are issued and inspected by Frederick County Permits and Inspections; inside the City of Frederick, the city runs its own permit office.

How often does the neutralizing media need replacing?
Typically every six to twelve months, depending on how acidic your water is, the size of the system and how much water the household uses. The media is consumed as it neutralizes — it is not a filter that can be cleaned — and a bed that has been used up stops working without any obvious sign.
Will a neutralizer affect my plumbing warranty?
The opposite. Acidic water corrodes copper from the inside and is a common cause of pinhole leaks and early appliance failure, so neutralizing it helps keep manufacturer warranty coverage intact by preventing the corrosion-related damage that voids it.
How do I know if my water is acidic?
Blue-green staining in sinks, tubs or on fixtures, pinhole leaks appearing in copper pipe that otherwise looks fine, a metallic taste, and water heaters or appliances failing earlier than they should. Testing the pH confirms it in a single visit.
Is this only for well water, or municipal too?
Both. Private wells are the more common case in this area, and a well has no treatment at all except what the owner installs. Municipal supplies can also run acidic. We test either before recommending anything.
