A PRV is not a fit-and-forget device. It is mechanical, it works constantly, and it lasts roughly seven to twelve years depending on the water and how hard it is working.

Permits in Frederick work differently
Frederick sits outside the WSSC service area, so the permit process that covers Mallick's Montgomery County work does not transfer here. In the county, plumbing permits are issued and inspected by Frederick County Permits and Inspections; inside the City of Frederick, the city runs its own permit office.

What is a PRV in plumbing, and why does it matter?
A pressure reducing valve is fitted to the main water line and lowers incoming municipal pressure to a stable level, usually 50 to 60 psi. It matters because pressure consistently above 80 psi wears out pipes, joints, fill valves and appliances early, and wastes water on the bill in the meantime.
How long does a PRV last?
Typically seven to twelve years, depending on water conditions and how hard it works. They usually fail open rather than closed, so the house returns to full main pressure without any dramatic sign — the symptoms simply come back.
Will a PRV lower my water bill?
Yes. Lowering excessive pressure can reduce water use and strain on fixtures and appliances.
Can I install a PRV myself?
We do not recommend it. A PRV is installed on the main line and has to be sized, sited and calibrated correctly. Getting the setting wrong trades one problem for another, and work on the main is a licensed plumber's job.
What are the signs I need a PRV installed or replaced?
