Three things worth trying before you call
Some disposal faults are genuinely worth trying yourself before arranging a service visit. Unplug the unit and check the chamber for a utensil or a bone jammed in the gears. Check the breaker. Press the red reset button on the underside — it trips more often than people expect and resets in a second.
If none of those three brings it back, stop there. Reaching into a disposal that is still connected is how people lose fingers, and a motor that hums under load is a mechanical jam rather than an electrical fault.

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not working?
The motor is running but the blades are jammed — usually an object in the chamber or a seized gear. Switch it off at the wall, do not reach in, and check the chamber with the power disconnected. If it will not free, call us rather than forcing it, because running a jammed motor is how the unit gets destroyed.
What should never go down a garbage disposal?
Grease, coffee grounds, fibrous vegetables like celery and corn husks, bones, eggshells, and pasta or rice. Grease is the worst of them — it goes down warm and sets in the line below the disposal, so the unit is fine and the drain is blocked.
Is there anything I can try before calling?
Check the chamber for a jam with the power off, check the breaker, and press the red reset button underneath the unit. Those three fix a good share of dead disposals. If none works, the fault is mechanical or electrical and worth a proper look.
