A sewage pump is not a sump pump, and the two are confused constantly. A sump pump moves clean groundwater out of a pit to keep a basement dry. A sewage pump moves wastewater and solids from fixtures up to the sewer line.
They fail differently, they are serviced differently, and one cannot do the other's job. If your basement floods in heavy rain, you are looking for a sump pump; if a basement bathroom backs up, it is the sewage pump.

The need is structural rather than optional. When a fixture sits below the level of the sewer main — a basement bathroom, a lower-level laundry, a below-grade commercial unit — gravity cannot carry the waste out, so it has to be lifted.

What is the difference between a sewage pump and a sump pump?
A sump pump removes clean groundwater from a pit to keep a basement dry. A sewage pump lifts wastewater and solids from fixtures below the sewer line up to it. They are different machines for different jobs, and one will not substitute for the other.
When does a property need a sewage pump?
When a fixture sits below the level of the sewer main — a basement bathroom, a lower-level laundry room, or a below-grade commercial unit. Gravity cannot move waste uphill, so it has to be pumped. If your property is below the sewer line, you have one.
What are the warning signs a sewage pump is failing?
Running longer than it used to, cycling more frequently, unusual noise, or wastewater backing up into the lowest fixture. The backup is the late sign — the run time and the cycling are the early ones, and they are the point at which a repair is still small.
